George Lambert emigrated with his family from England to Sydney in 1887. He studied with Julian Ashton and began illustrating books and drawing cartoons for the Bulletin. In 1899 he won the Wynne Prize with Across the Blacksoil Plains and in the following year won a travelling scholarship. He lived in London, working mainly on portraiture, and had several works exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1917 he became an official war artist visiting Egypt, Palestine and Gallipoli. Returning to Australia in 1921 he continued to paint landscapes and portraits, winning the Archibald Prize in 1927. In the 1920s he became interested in sculpture and received several large commissions, including a statue of Henry Lawson in the Domain, Sydney (1931).
